sound problems since farcry: help

I have a rather annoying problem. And the leeching yet addictive farcry seems to be the culprit!

Im using C-media wave device, which was working properly. Since i updated farcry to 1.3, my sound was messed up in the game. WHen i exited, i tried to play an mp3, windows "thought" for a second, then you here the error "ding" noise and nothing else. THen i updated farcry to 1.31. That fixed the in game noises, but not my mp3 problem. I updated my drivers, but it didnt help.
Any suggestions?

as usual, spyware checked.

Also, when this problem hit, before upgrading to 1.31, i uninstalled service pack 2.
