Windows XP Recovery

Our daughter has an off the shelf standard HP Desktop, being 12 years old she went to some website and naturally got a virus that pretty much destroyed the comp. I did a Windows recovery as it suggested and now it will boot up to the desktop but will go no further and it will not even recognize a CD. I was told that XP has it's own way of repairing itself, but I can't seem to help it along. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you get rid of the virus before you did anything else?

What exactly did you do by way of ‘recovery?’ All info' will help us to help.

Well yes I did get rid of the virus, and as far as the recovery goes we did a system restore first and nothing happened there, so in XP they also have a system recovery and then did that. This comp was a package type that you buy at wal-mart and it did not come with any recover disc.

Do you get a normal POST beep? If not, what do you get?
Can you boot into safe mode? If so, try Start_Run, then type
sfc /scannow
Unfortunately it may not work without an XP disk, but worth a try. Also while in safe mode check your boot log, Device Manager and event viewer and see what clues they provide..

As far as a recovery disk is concerned, this may help:

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks puccini, I am able to get to the desktop and all of the files but it will not except a cd. Now I come home today only to find Granny had bought a new HP for our daughter and took the problem pc with her so now I don't have to worry with it. Out of my hands now. But Thanks for all of the help.
Granny to the rescue!

Great. Now all you have to do is convince your daughter that she won't always get a new computer as a reward for picking up a virus! Best of luck!
