Error message on boot up
My Grandaughter has an HP Pavillion A250N, 2.6 gb Pentium 3, 512mb ram, and running Windows xp home with SP2 installed.
On every boot up she is getting two error messages 1) Error: could not load library TopSearch.dll 2) Runner error: invalid Backweb application id 137903 What would cause these errors and how do I get rid of them for her? Thanks

Topsearch.dll is malware associated with Kazzaa.
What antivirus and spyware scanners have you got on that machine? also if this is bundled with the Kazzaa software the only way to get rid of it sometimes is by uninstalling Kazzaa, you might find uninstalling the spyware from Kazzaa stops Kazzaa working.

From a search on Google
When I log on to Windows, I get runner error "invalid backweb application, id 137903", how do i fix this?. You have downloaded a program that contains spyware or adware. The spyware or adware has been removed but the program requires the spyware to be installed in order to run, without it you will get the Run Time error. This program runs on startup so you will have to uninstall the program that had the spyware associated with it. Run Msconfig from the Start > Run window and turn off the progam that you downloaded, or uninstall the program. If you still cannot find the program do a search for files that contain the word "Backweb" |

If you can get into windows (this shows up some time during startup) usually what is happening is that there are registry entries which are attempting to call the programs from the startup entries in the registry. To fix this, you can use spyware programs such as ad-aware or spybot. Run one of these programs (they have compatability issue supposedly) and remove any spyware that they find. Another great spyware utility is microsoft anti-spyware which is free from microsoft (the advanced tools can help tremendously when trying to stop spyware) If you have already done this, you will most likely have to manually edit the registry.
!!!Editing the registry is dangerous and can cause you computer to become inoperable. Do the following at you own risk this information is for reference if you break your computer do not blame me!!!!! HKLM=HKEY Local Machine HKCU=HKEY Current user 1. Go to start>run 2. In run box type regedit (assuming you have 2000 or xp) 3. This will bring up the registry editor. Navigate to the following entry HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\current version\run The entries inside this registry key tell the computer what programs to run at starup. Look for an entry that calls up the program in question if it is present delete it Do this at your own risk!! 4. Now navigate to the following key HKCU\software\microsoft\windows\current version\run Again you are looking for a key that calls the file that is giving the error 5. Close the registry editor and restart the computer to see if the problme has been resolved. If the problem still persists, check the starup folder on the programs menu to see if there are any un needed programs in there 7. Another option would be to get the runner script from slient runners and post the results it the forums. With the output of this script (which gives a description of all startup entries on the computer) we may be able to help you locate what is causing this problem. Post back if you need anymore help |

Err instead of using your registry editor to access the RUN tree .. I would recommend you use msconfig to see your startup entries (START > RUN > msconfig ).
However, for your situation, I would recommend you post a hijack-this log : read this - http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=103171 for further info. Post the contents of your logfile and we can help you get to the bottom of this error |

Thanks to all who contributed. What GARYFL suggested appears to be working so far. I she encounters the issues again, I'll let you know. |
