As preparation for a system install this is what I'd recommend:
The first thing you should do is backup any important data that you wish to retain from your 98SE. Secondly, you should decide what route to take for installation. Either doing an upgrade or a fresh install. While an upgrade is good if you have some programs or data that you want carried over, it isn't as clean as doing a fresh install - wherever possible you should do a fresh install. Thirdly, boot to Windows 98 as you normally would, then insert the XP CD in and run the System compatibility advisor. If you are doing a fresh install, you can largely ignore program incompatibility reports, but make sure you look carefully for hardware compatibility. Once that is done, you are ready for installation. For a fresh install: The best method, I'd recommend is go into your system BIOS and set your CD as the first boot device. Then boot up your computer with the CD in the drive. You should see the installation start. Delete existing partitions and create new ones (its pretty self explanatory if you can read on-screen directions). If you are going to upgrade, then insert the XP CD from Windows 98 and choose to upgrade the OS. This site gives you a detailed screen by screen directions on how to go about an XP installation: http://www.blackviper.com/Articles/OS/OSguides.htm |

do everything statica said and when you format the hard drive make sure to format it to NTFS since it was FAT32 with windows 98.

I had someone tell me once that if the original drive is rather old, it's actually better to leave it as FAT32. I have yet to find out if it was his personal opinion or if he had actually knowledge. I've always made any XP hard drive NTFS and also any storage hard drive for an XP pc.

No difference on choice of NTFS for ANY drive that will support the OS.

If you are upgrading, do not convert the drive to NTFS until you are sure everything is working right. If you leave it FAT32, you can uninstall XP and revert back to 98, once you convert, this option is gone forever. You can convert any time after the fact at a command prompt.
convert x: /fs:ntfs (x being the drive letter) |
