Am I stuck being HP_Owner forever?

Is there an easy way to change C:/Documents and Settings/HP_Owner to C:/Documents and Settings/My own name ? It says it is a Windows system folder and cannot be moved or renamed.

Have you tried creating a new user account?

Click Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->User Accounts

From there you can pick whatever option will best suit you. You can create a new user, change existing user and so on.

Yeah, but that's not really what I want to do, I allready have my settings and documents, I don't want to have to do all that work over again. I was simple hoping someone would be able to tell me about a registry file I could edit.

I did that too, but I still lose all the work I've allready done. Is there a way to import the favorites and recently used documents to a new user account?

You should be able to just change the account name yourself within the same window you use to create a new account. It should give you the option.

What he is refering to is "Valued HP Client" With the HP company name listed as "organization" He would like it to say "His name" and drop the Company name.

There was a link in the daily tips from PC Mech that gave you directions how to "Custom Brand" your computer.

"Quote from PCMech Tips Of The Day"

Custom Brand your PC.
This allows you to place any picture and text so that it will be displayed in the system control panel; without having to mess with the registry. There are two parts to this:
Picture
1: Take any bitmap that's about 175x175 pixels in size.
2: Name it oemlogo.bmp
3: Copy it to the \windows\system32 folder
Text
1: open notepad type the text below and add the text to be displayed after the "="
[General]
Manufacturer=
Model=
[Support Information]
Line1=
Line2=
Line3=
(you can create more lines if you wish)
2: Now save as oeminfo.ini into the \windows\system32 directory.
That's it. Now you have a custom branded pc.

HTH.

Nah, I got that email also, and I made a picture of Obi Wan Kenobi, Padawan Learner from Episiode One. Maybe someday I'll consider myself a Jedi Master, but not now.

What I'm referring to is the C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner. My last computer had my own name there. I guess I could format the harddrive and reinstall XP using my own disc and not this recovery console. I don't think I would miss anything aside from the time I've taken to set it up and disable/uninstall all the bundled junk that I wasn't interested in.

Main reason I bought this was the processor, motherboard and printer. Got a deal from work that I couldn't pass up. $500 in mail in rebates. It would a LOT more if I bulit it on my own. All the drives and cards I took out of my last pc.

after you create your new account copy your files in the hp_owner folder into your new account folder. then you'll have all the files in the new account and can delete the hp_owner account.

Hmm, worth a try, I didn't think drag and drop would work, I thought there were some changes in the registry that had to take place.
