Background Desktop Corrupted
Have just returned from a customer that had his Win XP Professional PC attacked by viruses.
Ran AVG 7.0 in Safe Mode after disabling System Restore, that found over 40 viruses & Trojan Horses. It appeared to Heal everything expect one file – no way of finding out which one. However the system is not clean, as there is still a residual black .html page that has replaced the Background Desktop. Right clicking anywhere on the Desktop and left click Properties, there is no Background Tab in the Display properties. I tried to run sfc /scannow with the Win XP CD but it kept saying that the CD was not the correct one, when I know it is. Not sure how to clean this machine, short of formatting and starting again which I am loathe to do as there has not been a recent backup of all the data in My Documents.

Long shot - make sure the Themes service is running.

When you right click on the desktop, is Active Desktop an option? If so, is the Show Web Content checked? If so, click to uncheck it. There should also be a Web tab in the display properties, see what you can do there.

Background problem still there - white only. Right clicking the Desktop & selecting Properties just shows a General tab with the desktop.html file & says Not Available.
Rebooted once more to Safe Mode, search for desktop.html (in My Computer) Windows refused to delete it. Ran Spybot again in Normal Mode, removed 7 problems. Ran AVG in Safe Mode - NO VIRUSES found - at last! Internet Explorer still insists on resetting Home Page to www.top-search despite changing the Home Page in Options. |

You still have spyware - a home page hijacker. You need more tools. Start with Ad-Aware and M$ Antispyware. Read the sticky thread in the Security forum about HijackThis.
You can delete a file in use with MoveOnBoot. |

Ran HighjackThis (2x) & fixed items. Ran Spybot - 11 probs. Fixed. D/loaded M$ Antispyware & LSPFix. Ran both. Fixed Homepage highjack problem. Ran AVG in Safe Mode - no viruses. Ran sfc /scannow. Fixed Desktop hijack problem by going to Control Panel/Display/Desktop/Customize Desktop & in Web tab delete SECURITY.
