I'm using WIN 98SE but do not have the conventional shutdown problem inherent to WIN 98SE, that is hanging at the Windows desktop logo.. I did have but fixed it some time ago. Now, when I shut down from either the start drop down menu or a shutdown shortcut, my sound does not play and the desktop hangs with all the icons becoming a little blurry. This occurs for about 20 sec. after which the system not responding error message that gives the choice Wait - End Task - or Cancel pops up. When I click end task the sound plays and the machine proceeds to shutdown. This happens in 95% of cases. The other 5% the machine shuts down normally. I'm running NAV current edition , Norton PersonaL Firewall and have broadband cable ISP.
Have Spybot and AdAware loaded. Regards, Vetteman |

Sounds like a program is having trouble shutting down. Have you tried quitting Norton before shutting down? I would try that on everything running, one at a time to see which one is causing the problem. Keep us posted on how it's going.

Redo- yes, I closed NAV before sutdown and it did not help.
Cricket - your references are for the conventional WIN 98se shutdown problem. I don't think anything here will help. Thanks, Vetteman |

WIN 98SE Shutdown
glc,
No system reference is stated in this window. After clicking shutdown the desktop icons remain but are dimmer and fuzzy. Then this window comes up. Clicking end task removes the desktop icons (and sometimes the shutdown sound), than after 5-10 seconds a full shutdown. Could adware be affecting the shutdown? Regards, Vetteman |

Should have stated -- sometimes shutdown sound plays, but no always, prior to full shutdown.

In Control Panel, double-click Sounds (or Sounds & Multimedia). In the Events box, click Exit Windows. In the Name box, click None. Click OK. Test Windows shutdown. If Windows does not hang, the problem may be a corrupt sound file. Restore the file from your Windows disk or from wherever you obtained it, then test Windows shutdown." The links don't only cover the known Win98SE shutdown problem, they cover a number of other possibilties. I would go down the 15 Step check list and eliminate every possible scenario they list. Cricket,
Thought I fixed it. Removed Exit Windows sound and it shut down normally. However, upon repeating shutdown, it hung as usual. I'll need to look at your other suggestions. Thanks, Vetteman |

. . . just out of curiousity, does it always shutdown normally from Safe Mode?
And, just before your next shutdown from Normal Mode, check your System Resources & see if they're under 50% (right-click a blank area of your desktop, select Properties, select Performance). Some of your background processes take quite a toll on Win9x resource usage. If your resources are particularly low, post that info here. And for a quick-fix try, if it's been a while since you've updated your sound & video drivers, yet have updated your DirectX recently, try newer sound & video drivers. Those links Cricket provided are good ones: it's often a long process trying to root out a shutdown problem. Best of luck! . . . Gary |

Gary,
I downloaded new drivers for my Gainward GeForce 3 video card and it appears to have solved the problem. The last 3 shutdowns have been normal. Thanks for your help. Vetteman |

I was premature in claiming a fix. Shutdown problem persists. Had problems down loading drivers from the Gainward site. I have a Gainward GeForce 3 Ti 200 64Mb video card. I'll keep trying the other suggestions.
