somthin wrong with xp locks up,, help appreciated.

i recently bought this comp from a freind it has win 2000 and win xp pro i really dont kno alot about comps but whenever im on xp it locks up jus freezes i hear a beep and everythin stops have no clue wut it could be. appreciate the help

Give us more detail on your system (i.e. name & model of mobo, cpu, vid card, etc.). Have you installed any new hardware or drivers. The more details that are mentioned the better answers will be submitted.

model of mobo is an asus ms-6738
amd xp 2200
256 ddr ram
30 gig hd
i think the problem is in the 2 os's ?
no vid card
its gota IEEE card or somthin tahts wut i connect my ipod with

i been readin som other posts and ive tried to open my comp and put a fan towards it but still nothin,, jus locks up randomly it doesnt do it all time constantly itll be like maybe once or twice a day,, and to anwser ur question i havnt really done nothin with that comp jus put rip my music from cds and d/l install itunes for my ipod

Try to found out something about dual booting and then deside are you gona keep both winowses or are you gona loose one of them.
I've tried to have both of them on my comp but there was always some problems and of course I've deleted win2k.

The machine could be overheating. Check to see if all of the fans are spinning. Also check your temps.

With only 256megs of ram, XP can be unstable. 2000 should run pretty good on the 256. Also check to see how much disc space is left on the HDD. 2 OSes is going to use a lot of the 30 gigs.

if you gonna run XP on 256MB ram turn it into the classic mode "old windows look" and turn off the performance features all of them. Other than that if you can put in another stick of ram and go down to XP that would likely fix most of your problems. Good luck...

if i wanted to take off an os how would i do it im kinda new to al this stuff only thing i use comp for is my ipod and typin up papers... o and the multi boot thing im pretty sure thats wut i got ill start up comp and itll say whether to start with 2k or xp. about the HD theres 15 gig left
