Windows 98SE & Swat 3 Issue
Having an issue with Windows 98SE and Swat 3 that I need help with. I am not 100% sure what the problem is, but thought if falls under Win98. I have two systems. Here are the simple system specs:
SYS 1 Duron 1.2GHz 256MB PC100 RAM SIS Video Card Generic Mobo Windows 98SE SYS 2 Sempron 2200 CPU 512MB PC2700 128MB Ti 4200 Video Card PC Chips M811 Mobo Windows 98SE I loaded Swat 3 on my new Sempron system. When I go to play, the intro movie plays fine, then it completely freezes at the main menu. Note: The demo also did this on this machine. I was able to get the demo to work by restarting my PC and playing at 800x600 resolution only. I can't do that with the regular game - freezes everytime. I tried it on my older Duron systema and it loads and plays just fine. I am baffled on what the problem could be. I installed Directx 6.0 Media like the game says (as well as without it to troubleshoot), I reinstalled the main Windows 98SE files, and I reinstalled my 66.XX nVidia drivers. Nothing - it still keeps freezing at the menu. My only thoughts for fixing - maybe it is the DirectX 9.0c I have installed or how I built my PC. DirectX is the only component I have not reinstalled since my PC build. When I built the system, I had a hard drive with Windows 98SE that I hooked up and configured to the new hardware. I should also note that the mobo is only rated at a FSB of 266. I am running it with a Sempron with a 333 FSB and memory that matches that speed. The strange part. My other games like FarCry, BF1942, and Half-Life 2 play fine. Any ideas? Thank you. |

Always use the latest version of DirectX. Check the manufacturer of the game to see if there are any patches or updates.

Thank you. I have all the patches applied and I have DirectX 9.0c loaded (which I think is the latest). Maybe it got screwed up with my build somehow. I will try to reload it tonight and see what happens.

Have you installed the Bios update that helps the motherboard "support Sempron" (though this is intriguing, given the Kt266 chipset - make sure that your motherboard version is at least 3.1 to try this Bios update. The model # as it reads at the PCchips website is M811LU v.3.1. The release note reads:
file name : M811811.bin Checksum : 8000h release note: Support AMD Sempron CPU A link to that Bios update is here: http://www.pcchips.com.tw/PCCWeb/Pro...=Specification Not so uncommon to have a system freeze in gameplay when overclocking. You might be able to find a patch on the website for the game. If your motherboard is brand-new, you might be able to exchange it for one that matches the hardware - especially the Sempron, better. Best of luck . . . Gary Last edited by GaryRouth; 03-01-2005 at 01:41 PM. Reason: fixed the pcchips download link |

Newest nVidia drivers give a lot of problems with old games, try older drivers
