no sound in 98

my cousin called me a bit ago, said her sound wasn't working all of the sudden. she is running windows 98. i don't know much about the system, but i had her try the things i could think of.

first, i had her go into the volume control, and it opens and closes really quickly. then i had her open up media player and try playing something but she couldn't hear anything.

do you have any advice, or things i should have her check on?

thanks
craig

Hi hobey19

Of course, she'll want to check the obvious things:
1) the cord connections (line out to speakers is the light-green connector)
2) good power to the speakers
3) dials on the speakers seem OK

and the not-so-obvious things:
4) In Control Panel, Multimedia - are the sound devices listed OK?
5) In Device Manager, are the sound devices listed OK?
6) In Device Manager, are any devices flagged with yellow exclamation points or red Xs?
7) In Windows Media Player, the sound levels are set normally?

and have her follow up the Windows Sound Volume clue:
8) from Start/Run have her type SndVol32.exe
. . . does it appear and disappear as before? Or? And are any "mute" boxes checkmarked? If so, which ones?

Has she just installed anything new (program or hardware)?
Has she run a full-system "thorough" antivirus/antispyware scan yet?

If all the devices look OK, and nothing is flagged, connections look good, Sound Volume looks normal, etc. . . . then if she has a disk with her sound drivers on it (or can download a recent driver to a folder to refer to), you can remove the sound devices in Device Manager, reboot, and reinstall the drivers.

Might just be a loose connection or mute option checkmarked.
. . . Gary
