Question xp crash on install

I tryed to install win xp upgrade from win 2k. XP setup crashed, I tryed again and was successful. However now at boot up I have a choice of windows or win xp. If I choose windows then win xp trys to start but crashes and reboots. If I choose win xp everything is good. I have tried to repair the "bad" xp install but winxp setup says it cannot find that version of windows to repair. Can I fix this and be left with a dual boot of win2k and xp?
I know I can modify boot.ini and just boot straight to the good xp.
I have one hard disk with 2 partions C:\ which has the win2k files and D:with good xp install.
Sorry this is so long but any help would be greatly appreciated. I dont want to just format everything and start over.
Thanks
