hi
the problem. We have a server set up in the office and several computers connected to it for internet access and some file sharing. We have a new person that has a laptop that we want to connect to the server for file sharing purposes. The problem is this. We have a cat 5 connection to the laptop, we do have internet access but only partial shared file access. we can connect to one other computer on the network but not to the shared files on the server or any of the other computers?? any help would be greatly appreciated on this subject. Or if more info is needed, let me know and I will get the information from them. Loren |

What exact operating system is on the server? Is this a simple peer to peer network or is this a NT/2K/2K3 domain?

we are running a peer to peer with XP on the server. I am consulting with the company to fix this problem. Not sure but I think the server is just for having a central machine to share files and Internet.

Is the server XP Home or XP Pro? If Pro, is simple file sharing enabled or disabled?
What OS is on the laptop, the computer it CAN connect to, the computers it can NOT connect to, and if XP Pro, simple file sharing or not? Simple file sharing is a selection on the View tab in folder options, it's the last item. XP Home can only do simple file sharing, so it won't have that selection. If simple file sharing is disabled, you must use traditional NT-style file sharing conventions, including adding users and permissions. |

XP pro for all machines I would imagine the ones that I have worked on personally all have pro on them so I would imagine the server would have pro on it also.
There are 4 or 5 other machines connected to the network already and they can all see each other and share files. it is just one laptop that is the problem and it has pro on it also. |

Please answer the simple file sharing issue, and if it's SP2, is filesharing allowed in the firewall settings? If it's not SP2, turn off the firewall.
