Problems with Updates

OK, here's my bind.... I can't install the following updates, nor can I update my virus definitions for AVG 7.0. AVG says it can't find the server, whilst the XP ones just won't install, whilst a few others that were in the list at the same time did install. I was wondering what could cause this. For information, I've included the ones that failed.

The following updates failed to be installed successfully:

816093: Security Update Microsoft Virtual Machine (Microsoft VM)
Microsoft GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB840987)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB841533)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB873376)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB873339)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB885836)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB833987)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB871250)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB890175)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB891711)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB885835)
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB886903)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB888302)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB890047)
Security Update for Windows Media Player 9 Series (KB885492)
Security Update for Windows Messenger (KB887472)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB891781)

Send a message via AIM to Panama Red
Might be a good idea to follow the instructions in this thread and then post a Hijack This log. Good luck.

Ok, a further update at this stage....
According to my installation history on the Windows website, I don't have SP2. I also can't see it on the install page as an option, and of course you can't download it on someone elses computer and install it. Not only does AVG and Windows not allow updating, but neither does Spybot and AD-Aware. Finally, I have a worm called Roron.D, and despite following the instructions on the Symantec website to the letter, I found that I needed to make no registry changes, nor did it fix the problem as AVG intermittently pops up with detections of it. I am about to try a HijackThis log, I was hoping once I post it it could be moved to the appropriate forum to get the attention of those skilled with HijackThis.

While I remember, I've already run Ad-Aware and Spybot on this, but obviously 3 months or so behind on the updates

Maybe you should try to turn off System Restore and then try to run windows in safe mode and use antivirus or if you can download Microsoft Removal tool or some fix from symantec and run them in safe mode.
Then download service pack2 network install and update computer to a date.

I've already run it in Safe mode and tried all the removal tips on both Symantec and a few other sites I found.... none worked. But thanks Macko, keep the tips coming. Maybe you'll stumble on something simple I missed

For an update on the situation, I have posted a HJT log in the Security forums and will discontinue using this post
