Hi dchristey,
The link you posted seems to give good instructions. It sounds like you know already how to get into the recovery console, true? Can you walk us through the steps you took?
I'm not sure, but I think you need to have installed the recovery console prior to your need to recover! The XP CD has the recovery console on it, but you don't have that. There is an alternate way to create XP setup disks with the RC... which is listed in the below article, but does your laptop have a floppy drive?

Here's another article that deals with using the recovery console:
http://www.tweakxp.com/article10741.aspx

You shouldn't need your XP CD. I think most laptops have a copy of the Install CD's files on a hidden directory in the C: drive...

Sorry, as I read this over, its not as helpful as I hoped... but there is a lotta brainpower out here to help you with this.

Go into bios and set first boot to cd. Insert you copy of XP.. When it finishes loading all of the necessary files choose install WinXp now. Onces it finds the existing copy your going to choose an existing copy.. DO not use recovery console... It will load over the existing one replacing any missing files... All other programs will still be there.

doubledragon5--that works on older versions of windows, but it has been my experiance that you can't install xp on top of an existing copy without loosing all other files and settings. Exactly how do you do it?

You can try to repair curent installation if you don't have recovery console it's similar proces that doubledragon5 explained but one difference windows setup will offer you to repair curent installation!!!
