Please Help!

First off, before I tell me problem, I want to let you guys know I DO NOT WANT TO REFORMAT! I need to know if there's a solution to my problem that would not be formatting my HD, I have about 120gb of stuff that would take too much time to back up. Now, back to my problem... I was playing an online video game, and my internet suddenly disconnected. This is an all to common thing with my computer, and it usually just reconnects in a second or two. This time, there was no reconnect... So I restarted my computer, when I got back on, every icon on my desktop had turned into the find file icon. I then did some more looking and noticed that EVERY SHORTCUT on my computer had turned into the find file icon. I also came to notice that I couldn't open exe files by double clicking them, I had to make a shortcut, go through the find file thing (the little box comes up that says i can search on internet for appropriate program or search myself) and open it that way. I also noticed that I couldn't open internet explorer or many of the system tools in the control panel. Here's what I've done so far to try to fix it...
1. Numerous virus scans, all viruses removed and/or cleaned.
2. 2 system restores
3. Disk Defrag
4. CHKDSK
5. Adware/spyware scans, all removed
6. I've run all the computer diagnostics and all the HD diagnostics and they all cleared with no problems...
7. My last resort, a windows repair

COMPUTER INFO

-Im on cable modem
-I have a 3.0ghz p4 w/ht
-1024mb sd ddr2 ram @533mhz
-160gb hd @ 7200 rpm
-ATI 128mb x300 PCIe vid card

None of the above fixed it, I'm running out of ideas, please help me... Remember, I'm trying to avoid reformatting...
Thanks

What virus scans are you using? Are they up-to-date with definitions? Are you still unable to get on the internet with that computer? If so, you can download a program called Stinger from McAffee on another computer. It will fit on a floppy with all the latest definitions. May be worth a try. When getting rid of the virus that was/were cleaned and removed, you need to be sure your System Resore is unchecked or turned off to prevent it from returning. You may also want to try scanning in Safe Mode.

You said all viruses removed and then you run system restore did you run virus scan after restore, I'm telling you this because almost all viruses this day are unremovable 'till your system restore is turned on!!!
