Pent4 system using 98SE, background loads but no taskbar and no items on desktop. I can see cursor and move it around.
I tried to return to a previous registry but it didn't work. If I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL I usually see Msgsrv32 or RNAPP not responding. Or nothing at all. If I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL again to reboot I get "Fatal Error" and when I click enter through that screen, I see "fatal exception in VXD NTKERN (01). I am able too startup in safe mode, so I could reinstall. Any Suggestions? |

It's very possible that it's just spyware or viruses. Boot it into safe mode, and use msconfig to stop all your startup items from loading. If you can get it into normal mode then, start scanning.

Thanks GLC. No luck, so I decided to go ahead with a clean install. Everything went well, but turns out I have some bad clusters on my secondary hard drive. So I am currently downloading the manufacturers diagnostic hardware to double check everything. Looks like I will be loitering in the storage/hard drives forum for a while.

Well, the drive is still usable regardless of bad sector. Just make it as the hd that stores non important stuff. If its really bad sector, I doubt you can remove it, though you can defrag the drive to be more efficient.

I ran the WD repair software, it reported bad areas on the disk and repaired them. Extended test then reported all OK. I will definitely backup important data, and keep an eye on the drive's status. But I guess all is well for now.

. . . noticed that you're in Texas. If the drive acts up again in the near future, the good news is that most major hard drive manufacturers are offering sizable rebates to help clear inventory of the older ATA-100/133 drives. If you like your Western Digital, for example, there are current offerings where 80gb drives cost $90 at the store, but carry two $30 rebates = $30 (eventually). Usually the first rebate is from WD, the other from the retailer.

Thanks for the heads up. I noticed 160GB @ Circuit City for 60.00 AR.

Windows 98 can't use all 160 gigs in a single partition - you are limited to 128gb partitions, and you will need the Fdisk patch to work with a drive larger than 64gb. Depending on the motherboard, you may need a bios update or a controller card to use a drive larger than 137gb.

I am currently running 80gb drives. I should have posted that. I think my motherboard would probably be okay, it is an Asus P4t-e. So probably just have to partition. I knew there might be a limitation under Win98SE, but was uncertain about the actual numbers. Good to know.
