smokin Boot Problems C:\ rem[header]

I just installed a DVD Drive in a friends PC. Running windows 98. It is an old Dell they got from a small business a while ago. When I restarted the PC, it diplayed the message:

The case has been previously opened

C:\ rem[header]

I am not able to get by this unless I boot in safe mode. However I am kinda lost after that.

Any suggestions?

Usually, installing a DVD drive shouldn't cause any trouble for Windows, but here's a few things to check:

1) When you installed the DVD drive, did you install it with a separate IDE cable on the Secondary IDE controller on the motherboard, and did you jumper it as "Master"? [or, if using an 80-wire cable, did you use "CS" = "Cable Select", and place it on the end connector?]

2) If you installed the DVD drive onto a cable it now shares with a hard drive, did you change the jumpers for the hard drive, if necessary? [If jumpered Master/Slave, the hard drive would be Master, and the DVD Slave; if jumpered Cable Select, the hard drive should on the end connector, and the DVD on the middle connector].

3) Was the system working fine before adding the DVD? If yes, then the problem is likely a cabling mishap. [If no = what sort of symptoms?]

The line about the chassis being opened is normal. It is shown on systems that have the "chassis intrusion" settings on, and is helpful in corporate environments. It means only what it says: that the case was opened (when you installed the DVD drive].

If you are able to boot the system fine in Safe Mode, but not in normal = question #3 is particularly relevant. Has the system booted normally until just recently?

If you're unfamiliar with the Bios Setup for that system, see if you can find a manual (they're easily found online for Dells at Dell.com's support pages) for that motherboard - and check that the settings are OK.

Post with more info if it turns out not to be either cabling or Bios setup.
