Getting rid of stupid notification popups...
I keep my firewall off, and I do not have an anti-virus installed. I don't need either of them.
How do I get XP to stop reminding me of these two things? It seems every 10 minutes it wants to alert me! EDIT: NEVERMIND! Thanks, Dave

Open security centre in your control panel on right side you have option " change the way Security Centre alerts me" open that and leave all boxes blank and that's it!!!

My address book is stored online. I also don't have any important files stored on my computer. However, every once and a while I do an online virus scan at Trend Micro. Its free and I don't have to worry about updating anything.
Besides, who downloads email attatchments now-adays anyway? Most email clients have built in viri detection. Dave Last edited by daveyp225; 03-13-2005 at 10:26 AM. |

That's not the point. I have your IP address, and I could hack into your computer if I were so inclined and turn it into a zombie in a heartbeat without you ever knowing it unless you watch your packet count - and possibly get your account disabled for polluting the ether. Suit yourself on the antivirus, but you really should enable the firewall - it doesn't hurt anything and it would keep me out.

GLC is 10,000% right a little protection is better than none at all.

I am not disagreeing with you glc. In fact I completely agree that every computer should have protection.
The windows firewall inteferes with the network I have set up. It would work half of the time, but sometimes, for no reason at all, my internet connection would drop or apache wouldn't function correctly. Disabeling the firewall resolved these problems. BTW, How easy is it to hack through a router and a switch? The only ports that are forwarded are 80 and 21 because I run a server. Could someone potentially get in without knowing my password? Dave |

You didn't say you had a router. That's a decent firewall in itself. However, your server could still be hacked and those 2 ports are favorites for hackers to play with. Passwords mean nothing to hardcore hackers, if they want in bad enough they will find a way. Anyone who runs servers needs to be up on security procedures. The SP2 firewall has a lot of configuration options - it's a LOT better than the original XP firewall, but it still doesn't monitor for outgoing so it's still vulnerable to Trojans if one should get in.
All this is the main reason why I use a commercial webhost instead of hosting stuff myself. Security is their problem, not mine. |

I don't click to download anything but every once in awhile a site will auto-download (in the background) a virus.exe file and my virus scanner picks it up immeditately. Glad I'm protected.
