Hi All:
I'm building a new computer, and I ran into this problem... "While initializing device NDIS: Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer". Before I started this project I put my new WD 80GB hard drive in the old computer, partitioned it into four partitions, formated the first partition with the /s switch, then formatted the other three partitions, then I copied some files to the last three partitions before removing the hard drive. In the new computer I entered with my start-up floppy with CD Rom support and installed Win98. Everything went fine untill it went to run for the first time, then I got the above error. New Chaintech Motherboard Socket 478 ATX w/Sound. LAN. New CPU Pentium4 2.4GHz/512/533/1.5v. Used my old Ram, two sticks PC2100 unbuffered, non-parity = 512MB, worked just fine in the old computer. Used my old Nvidia 64MB video card that worked just fine in the old computer. I guess that "Device NDIS" my be causing the problem, but I can't find any reference to it anywhere, not even in the Chainteck manual. Sure would appreciate any help in solving this problem !!! And thanks ahead of time to everyone !!! Bill Lane

Not to worry, Bill. It's a known error for new Win98 installations in some systems with processors faster than 2 ghz.
Here's a link over at the Microsoft Knowledge Base for it. On that page is a link to an updated version of the file that should fix the error http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;312108 Best of luck . . . Gary |

Ndis Fix
Hi Gary:
Well I went to the Microsoft site that you directed me to and submitted a request for help (e-mailed support), but they still haven't answered. I searched the internet (Google), and found the Ndis Fix (312108usa8.exe) downloaded it, and it cleared up the problem. It installed a new ndis.vxd 157,909 bytes version 4.10.0.2000 file I want to thank you for pointing me in the right direction !!!, I don't know if I would ever have been able to associate my problem with that file. Thanks again, Bill Lane |
