Win98 Upgrade to Win98se
Hi all:
How do I upgrade from Win98 to Win98se? I upgraded my computer and on one of the Motherboard Installations (Intel IDE Bus Mastering Drivers) won't install, it tells me that I need to have Win98se, right now I only have my Win98 installed. How do I get, or where can I get an upgrade to Win98se so I can install the (Intel IDE Bus Mastering Drivers)? And will the upgrade mess up the IE 5.5 that I've already installed? Can I upgrade over to top of where I'm at now? Motherboard: ChaintechS845PE Socket 478 ATX w/sound, LAN. OS: Win98 Ram: two sticks of DDR PC2100 Unbuffered, Non-Parity = 512MB CPU: Pentium4 2.4GHz/512/533/1.5v Hard Drive: WD 80GB Thanks ahead of time, Bill Lane

A Win98SE upgrade is going to cost you almost as much as a WinXP Home upgrade, and I'd recommend you go that way. If you must have 98SE, yes, you can install over the top. It will remove IE 5.5 and replace it with 5.01. About the only place to buy 98SE any more is Ebay.

Hi Bill (& Hi glc)
If there's a Best Buy in your area (I can't remember if I saw any last time I visited Las Vegas), call the store & ask if they have XP Home Edition with a $50 rebate. The store here in Woodland Hills is offering XP Home Edition for $90, with a $50 rebate (=$40 - the lowest I've seen it). It's an upgrade Home Edition, so while doing a clean install (which I'd recommend), it will prompt for proof of prior version - just put your Win98 CD in the drive then & you're all set. . . . Gary |

Win XP Pro
Hi Gary & glc:
Well I had already sent the wife to Office Max to get the Win XP Pro before Gary posted. $214.00 with tax, OUCH!!! I was in a hurry to get this thing up and running I had a little trouble on my first attempt, and finally had to remove everything except my hard drive and the CD Rom. Can I do a clean install with Win XP Pro upgrade? I'm up and running now, and so far everything looks great Thanks again, Bill Lane |

No worries - you'll probably be glad in the long run that you got the Pro version, it has the best security features.
