start up problem

my friend has a laptop by compaq. sd his kid put a desktop picture made from the paint program. with the picture on there makes all the icons and the tool bar disappear. cant even right click to change the picture. had him go into safe mode and change desktop picture which worked. but when he rebooted the same desktop picture came up. even figured to do a system restore date to an earlier time before picture was put on but wouldnt let him put any date in there other than march 14th. before i reformat his computer. any other suggestions would be appreciated. this site has always been very helpful.

Try disabling the Active Desktop.

i thought it was the picture that was made in paint that was blocking the desktop. but deleted those files . rebooted in windows classic and no desktop can not click anything . yet i can go into safemode do anything in there i want. windows xp . compaq presario . any suggestions would be appreciated. before i reformat the drive.

i was able to go in safe mode and in msconfig bootup in diagnostic. now i am in the destop normally. the question is what is still the problem in normal mode

i can log onto the computer with ust the diagnostic mode. it has to be a program in the startup menu thats causing the desktop to dissapper on bootup. also have been noticing an error message that says Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library something about winlogon.exe. been looking at soltutions to no avail. trying to find a solution before i have to reformat friends laptop. windows xp home edition. any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you scanned for viruses and spyware?
