I am going to be working on a friends pc with windows ME on it with a dialup connection, I have a dialup connection on win98 pc , what I am going to do is install Adaware , Spybot and others and clean up her pc for her. what I need to know is how to make a new dialup connection on her pc without deleting her dialup connection I want install said programs then update and run as necessary to clean suspected spyware and other bad guys off of it She is going to get a new pc in a while but wants to make this one work better for awhile she says it looks up and you have to do a hard boot to get it up and running again and other various problem also can you suggest a good registry cleaner that anyone can use? also are there any BAD problems that I should specifically look for like update and patches that are nec. the main thing is the connection problem first and foremost I will need to know that info Thanks Dick

Why not just use the existing dial up connection? If the friend is from out of town you'd only have to change the phone number it dials.

scifi - to save time, consider downloading the antispyware titles ahead of time, along with anything else you want to install [such as AVG7 in case she either doesn't have antivirus, or the subscription has expired] - and burn these onto a CD-R disk. Might bring a copy of ZoneAlarm 4.5 too, if she doesn't have a firewall. And for a fast pre-emptive strike on the virus angle: you could run Stinger (it can knockout some of the most common virus infections) - just make a bootable floppy, and put stinger on it (write-protect the floppy before you place it in her computer). You execute stinger from the command line. You can download it from download.com, it's a free tool provided by McAfee. I generally don't recommend McAfee products, but this one works OK for emergencies.
This will save you a Lot of time, rather than depending on a dialup connection. Just a thought. . . . Gary |
