XP Professional trouble w/CD drive

Hi all-

My son's computer (Win XP Pro) will not recognize a new CD after the old one is ejected. This problem is intermittent. In Windows Explorer it still shows the files of the previous CD. The only way to solve this is to reboot. Is this a XP problem or a hardware problem?

Thanks,

tranman

Are you running SP1 or SP2?

What CD drive are you using?

What happens if you right click on the drive and hit "eject"? Do the contents dissapear then?

More

XP Pro SP1

Acer CD player (56x max) about 3 years old

When I eject the CD manually in My Computer, it clears the screen and allows the new CD's file to be shown.

His computer is running 256Mg of DDR ram

Are you burning stuff and it's not recognising the new CD, or does it happen irrespective of whether it's for burning or for running a program??
Also, when did the problem start?? Have you done any installs of anything recently which might compromise the drivers etc??

Not a burner

The CD drive is not a burner, playback only.

He's always installing software (purchased educational), so it is hard to say if that has had any effect.

Do you think it is a hardware problem or software?
