Cannot see CD drive or CD-WR

Hi,
i tried to open the CD drive but it wouldnt open, so i went to 'my computer' to see what's going on: i can't see the drive, not the CD drive or the CD-WR.
i went to 'device manager' and made a 'refresh', it took about 1 min to finish refreshing (which is unusual) and doesnt do any good. i did reboot but still, i cannot see anything.

using win xp pro,

Just in case someone else has this problem, you should post what it was you found that caused this problem.

Are you saying that you have never been able to access the drives ?????????
make sure your drives are jumpered correctly, and the cables are connected in the correct order then , see if the drives are seen in the bios. if so .,u should be fine .
