I have a new box with server 2003 installed on it. i wish to have a domain set up so that all the puters in my house logon to it so tehy can gain access to the files shared on my server. could someone point me in the right direction for this? does it matter that i am using a router?

achilipepper,
A basic guideline is that first, you would need to promote your server to a domain controller. You create the domain during this process. Then you would need to install Active Directory on the domain controller. There are many, many things to consider if you want to do this... What version of Windows Server 2003 do you have? Standard Edition. I have my Active Directory set up as well as DNS. I have a domain created and a couple users added, but when I try to logon a computer on the network it says to check my un/pw. Help?

Is there a reason why you're trying to use a domain? It would be much easier to just set the server up with XP Professional and turn on Simple File Sharing on all the computers. Also, if any computer in your house is running XP Home, it will not be able to join the domain, because Microsoft deliberately crippled XP Home so that businesses that needed to set up a domain would buy Professional.
If all of the computers are running XP Pro and you really do want to use a domain, go into the System control panel, click on the Computer Name tab, click on Change, and type in the name of your domain in the appropriate box (you will have to switch the radio button to the Domain field for it to work). You will be prompted for your domain admin password (the Administrator account on your server). Keep in mind that you will lose fast user switching functionality and the Welcome screen on all computers that are joined to the domain, and that each time anyone logs on, they will have to authenticate with the server (which can be a lengthy process, especially if you don't turn off digitally signing communications).

I have read over the following threads. I have just set up a domain on my server, just really to learn something new with windows. Now I am curious to why one would setup a domain on a server and what it is really used for. This may sound a little silly, but as I have stated before I am up to learning new things. Any suggestion on what I can do next would be great.
Thanks In Adavanced Adam B Cohen |
