need help with PC slowing down

I put this PC together in December and it has quickley slowed to the point that it takes 10 min to start and 5 to shut down. I have defraged scaned poked and proded this thing 3 ways from side ways and cant improve its performance. It is so slow that the only bareable game is solitar. Hard ware is not out of the questions but it all performs well in my other system. The MB is a 661 (i think) MSI the PSU is a off brand that worked in my system for a year.

The only real strange behaivor it has is it will not connect to the LAN intill you open a browser and search on something...anything...

Check for Spyware, Virsuses to make sure you don't have any and another thing I would do is get some kind of registry cleaner. I use System Mechanic which does a real good job and it's set on a schedule so I don't to remember to do it. There are plenty of other good registry cleaners out there (Free/Commerical).
