I can't get my new PC to boot

I recently built a new PC for the first time, intending to scrap my old one. Having been told that it would be OK to do so, I extracted my old hard drive, installed it in the new PC and attempted to boot from it, but got a screen message that Windows wouldn't run, probably due to a hardware change. On putting the old HDD back in my old PC, it worked as usual. Mind you, I am changing from Pentium Celeron to AMD Athlone, with correspondingly suitable mobo, so I am not that surprised.
Persevering, I bought a new Maxtor HDD and installed that. The POST on the new PC is OK, and the BIOS detects everything; using Max Blast 4, I copied my old HDD to my new one, but it still refused to boot. I assume it is the Windows XP previous settings to be the fault.
Trouble is, the old machine had XP ready installed when I bought it, so I never did have an installation disk.(Would the operation I'm trying to perform be illegal, anyway then?) Would it be worth buying a new XP installation disk and trying again? Or is the problem something blindingly obvious? Thanks for reading..

Just buy new xp install and don't bother with legal or ilegal when you buy new one you are legal 100%.
Your old installation is set for old configuration and can't boot on a new hardware configuration!!!

Okay, thanks. I guess I can borrow a copy and enter the ver. code rather than buy another disk.

If whoever you borrow that disk from needs to reinstall XP he/she won't thank you in the least when they can't activate XP.
Also Micorsoft's new automatic updating is quite likely to treat the both of you as pirates.
Just by an OEM copy of XP Home, it'll make your future life much less fraught.

That's been good advice. I bought a new xp pro, and Bill Gates and I are delighted. Thanks everyone.
