Upgrading to XP?
I'm still using ME and have some new software that just doesn't like it, plus the company only supports xp now. I see lots of oem stuff on ebay, plus some full retail versions. Any problem with the oem, it's cheaper. Which do you recommend and where would you buy it. TIA.

Yes buy the OEM version, you just don't get Microsoft telephone tech support or a nice fancy box, or manual with it, but software wise it's all the same and way cheaper for OEM version.. On the other hand, Best Buy right now has XP home upgrade version for 89.99 along with $50 rebate. As long as you have your ME disk and plan to keep your ME disk this could be one good deal here, Winxp for 39.99...
EDIT: Sorry, the rebate has just expired yesterday at BB.

Before you buy XP. I'd make sure your system can handle it, sure would be a pain to buy XP, not be able to install it and of course once opened not be able to return it.
MS has the free tool as a download under 'windows xp upgrade advisor'. It is actually just the first part of the install of XP...here is the link. http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;307726 As to versions, I'd shy away from anything E Bay myself, anything cheap is likely a copy which will at best not allow updates from MS and worst not be able to install/activate, or is a restore disk from some OEM company (like Dell fro example) that will have the same good chance of issues as the copy. I'd get the OEM copy which frees up your ME license for other uses/sale. If you get the upgrade version you will ned to keep ME to be able to reinstall later.

If you have the winme CD you can always buy the xp upgrade. You can use it as a full install w/full support.

Please note the following with OEM disks. While there are many retailers who offer OEM disks, make sure that you buy OEM disks that are generic - as in not for Dell computers or Compaq etc etc. Firstly, these OEM disks will not necessarily work on computers that they weren't designed for (for example Dell OEM's look for BIOS information to validate that they are being installed on a Dell system). Secondly, it is illegal as per the EULA to install OEM disks other than on systems they were branded/designed for.
As mentioned, buying generic OEM disks is perfectly legal and a perfectly viable option. Make sure you use a competent retailer (newegg is a good one) |

Also, I would recommend doing a clean install with the XP disk. XP upgrade on top of ME has been known to cause problems.
