Recovery CD
Hello,
I'm in a terrible situation here but hopefully I'll have my computer fixed soon. A guest came over and used the computer, unfortunately the computer wasn't shutdown properly. So what happened to my computer? Firstly, the mouse doesn't appear but when I select Windows 2000 it does. The screen resolution is now 640 x 480 and 56 colors. I tried fixing the settings but that won't work either (since my mouse didn't show up I had to use my keyboard). Whenever I start the computer it says there's an error in KERNEL32.DLL. I tried System Restore, but that doesn't work. It brings up the KERNEL32.DLL error also and does not make any changes (I've tried all the checkpoints). So that leaves me with only one choice, the recovery CD, which I can use to Factory Restore the computer! Unfortunately my little brother was playing with it and scratched it up so that doesn't work for me anymore. Anyone here have knowledge about recovery CDs? I'm thinking of finding someone here who has the recovery CD that can copy the files and upload them to the web so I can download and burn to a CD. Is that possible? I have another set of recovery CD's but they don't start and I've also run the start.exe file but that won't work for some reason either. I have a Windows ME, and I'm using a Compaq Presario (Model 5108US, if that helps). If anyone knows any other ways to fix my computer please let me know. Thanks! |

"Firstly, the mouse doesn't appear but when I select Windows 2000 it does." Please explain the when I select Windows 2000 part. WHat other options are there? Are you dual booting?
What is the Exact Verbiage of the error message? The vast majority of Windows errors/solutions can be found here: Search the Support Knowledge Base (KB) http://support.microsoft.com/search/?adv=1&spid=1173

When you installed Windows 2000, did you put it to a separate hard drive, or to a separate partition on the same hard drive as WinMe?
Does the Win2000 installation still boot and run OK? If yes - try installing your antivirus program onto the Win2000 installation & running a full computer scan (this will scan the WinMe partition/s as well). Do the same with your antispyware programs. (I'll assume you're behind a software or a hardware firewall.) Once the drive is proven clean, try booting the WinMe partition into Safe Mode, going to Device Manager, removing all listed mice. Also remove any listed Display Adapters except for Standard VGA. Then restart your WinMe. WinMe should find and reinstall your mouse. It may well not need any special drivers other than those builtin to WinMe. Then try reinstalling your video drivers. Let us know how it goes: & just in case you do have a reinstall of Windows, with Windows Explorer, check to see if your WinMe installation .cabs are in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs (if yes, we might be able to reinstall over-the-top from those .cab files on your hard drive [since your Recovery set is possibly damaged] - though we'd then likely have to run a "fixboot" while booting from your Win2000 CD to restore your dual-boot). . . . If you contact HP, they may sell you a new recovery CD.
