Firstly, it is recommended that you do not delete the administrative account. Its a good failsafe to have an Administrative account in case of any issues. Just remember to password protect it.
The way XP works with multiple accounts is to provide each account with its own My Documents etc. The first thing to do is to find out what your username was for the account. We can setup your computer in a manner that you do not have to be faced with having to log in, if you don't want to. We will need some information about how you login to get a better idea of whats going on. 1) How do you log in? Does your computer boot up and go directly to your desktop? Or do you have a "Welcome Screen" with different users listed on it and you click (and possibly type in a password) to select a user to log in as? 2) How was it before you created the administrator account? Did it just boot to the desktop? 3) What version of XP are you using? Home or Pro? Do you know what service pack you have (if any?) |

Hold the "windows" key on your keyboard (between alt and ctrl on the left side) and press the Pause/Break key (usually in the same row as all the F1, F2, F3, etc... but on the FAAAARRRR right). If this doesn't work, right click on "My Computer" and select properties from the menu. The properties window that appears will give you the version of windows as well as some other info.

Since you have the welcome screen, the simplest way to have your computer just log in automatically to your desktop is to click on START > RUN and type the following and press OK:
control userpasswords2 Take note of the user account names and groups that you have on the list. It is quite possible that your XP was setup in such a way that it logged into the user Administrator automatically. This was the standard behavior in XP before SP1 (which is why I asked what service pack you used - if it is pre-SP1 chances are your administrator account was being used). This is an extremely insecure method of running your system. Coming back to the users applet... you should see at least 2 accounts; both of them, I'm guessing belong to the group Administrators. (Another aside - the user account Administrator is the "God" account of your system. You may have any other named accounts that have the same priveleges of the "God" account - they belong to the Administrators group of accounts). Select the account you wish to log in automatically to - I would recommend using the named account (NOT the user Administrator). Now UNcheck the box for : Users must enter a username and password to use this computer. Under most circumstances, this should work just fine, and the next time you boot up - you will be logged in automatically with your newest user account. How to find the old documents from "My Documents" etc? If you've followed my advice on not using your Administrator user account on a daily basis, you should be using the new account, where you are missing the document files you had stored before. This section will let you access and now copy it over to your new My Documents location (which should be empty). Press START > RUN and enter this .. then press OK C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents You should see all the old Documents in there - just drag them into your My Documents folder for the current user If you've previously stored files on the old Desktop and you want them on your new desktop .. just go to START > RUN and use this: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop You can drag those files into your desktop. |
