Problems with new motherboard - no sound/DVD will not play. Help?

So, big question that I really do not know where it belongs.

However, here is my problem.

My father has a Dell Inspiron 600m that had a faulty/bad motherboard. He got a Dell guy to come out and replace the motherboard with a brand new one. The Dell person also uploaded Windows XP Home Edition, then after he left, my father loaded the backup discs. So, everything is working fine, except now he has no sound and the DVD player that he uses claims that he needs some sort of decoder before it will play DVDs.

Does anyone have any idea as to what went wrong?

My thoughts were that maybe the Dell guy might have forgotten or took out the sound card. However, that seems a little strange to me.

What do you show for sound devices in the Device Manager? May be just a simple matter of a driver not installed correctly.

All the Dell guy does under warranty is reinstall Windows. It's up to the customer to reinstall drivers and applications. The sound driver is on the Dell Resource CD, and the DVD player will be on a separate CD. Drivers have to be installed for every device in Device Manager that's flagged.

Reason for this? Software has no warranty, only hardware. The only reason the tech reinstalls Windows is to make sure the hardware works.

There is no "sound card" - the motherboard has integrated sound.

Okay. Great. Thank you. So, the Dell discs have more on them then what the title displays, right? He had to unzip the extra files, I guess.

I didn't know that the Motherboard has integrated sound. I knew that on Desktops there is a sound card - so I just figured that a Laptop would, too. But, I suppose that they needed to save on space and make it more compact.

Thank again for all your help!
