Here are Microsoft's Longhorn hardware recommendations, from Pual Thurrott's "living document" on it (you know they'll be to low):
Desktop CPU: 3 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with HyperThreading Technology 530 (or higher) or 3 GHz Intel Xeon processor with 2 MB L2 cache, or AMD Athlon 64, Sempron, or Opteron 100, 200, or 800 processor, single or dual-core versions. Mobile CPU: 1.86 GHz Intel Pentium M processor 750 (or higher), or AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology, Mobile Sempron, or Mobile Athlon 64 processor. RAM: 512 MB of RAM or more, all platforms. http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...eview_2005.asp The activity center, I've been checking this out from time to time too: http://www.winsupersite.com/longhorn/ |

I had chance to testing it on my machine and it's great but it was slow on my machine I think because partly it's for stronger machines and partly it was beta version.

So do I but the problem seems to be on the PCMech site not on activewin.
Time to put Adblocker to work. |

Haven't been keeping up with it lately, but I remember seeing a while back that Avalon (the 3d interface for Longhorn) was going to require a DX9 vid card

I would say the odds are it is running better now Macko72 than it will when it finally releases. When Thurrotts put an estimate on how finished they were he said 75%. That means they will be able to slow it down a little more yet
![]() On another forum I was told my XP 2800+ probably can't run it, but the 3200+ machine has a shot. Remember Windows is "recommending" the A64 or P4 HTT 530 or Xeon. This from the same people that recommend at least 64 MB of RAM to run XP...lol. Sure the OS will run, just don't open an application. Don't worry though as it releases next summer, and most people won't go for it until around Xmas-early 2007. IMHO It's a little like us wondering how well our K-7's were going to run XP (Whistler) back in 1999. When the time comes to switch, most people won't want to be using an Athlon XP anyway. Edit: This isn't the Minimum, but the AVERAGE below, according to sources in Apr. 2004: Microsoft is expected to recommend that the "average" Longhorn PC feature a dual-core CPU running at 4 to 6GHz; a minimum of 2 gigs of RAM; up to a terabyte of storage; a 1 Gbit, built-in, Ethernet-wired port and an 802.11g wireless link; and a graphics processor that runs three times faster than those on the market today. That's according to developer sources close to the company. Microsoft officials would not comment on the Longhorn reference implementation. possibly biased source: http://www.microsoft-watch.com/artic...1581842,00.asp Last edited by rightcoast; 03-28-2005 at 12:10 PM. |

Yep. Still looks like XP with a fancy skin. I haven't heard about any real unique features that would be helpful, exept for the rotating desktop. That would be very useful for a multitasker, such as myself

Alright, just to fan the flames a little, where are exposé, dashboard, automator, spotlight and all the other technologies about to be released in Tiger next month? M$ normally do a great job of copying Apple, they're falling behind a ways now.
Check out the movies, pretty impressive stuff, especially spotlight. WARNING, Quicktime files!!!! http://www.apple.com/macosx/ http://www.apple.com/macosx/tiger/spotlight.html http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/expose/ edit: ohh, and smart folders built into Apple Mail, the finder etc.. Like itunes smart playlists but system wide. Too cool.

Foldin' For PCMech!

i actually have a copy of Longhorn Build 4074, yes its legal, i got it as part of my I-Tech class. some deal with msdn i think. either way, i had it running on my P4 1.6Ghz machine with 512MB of RAM. it was using 610MB of RAM at startup and over 1GB with just a few windows open!
as far as the 3D interface everyone talks about, i have yet to see it! it is more 3D than XP but not what everyone makes it out to be. yes, there will be a 32bit and a 64bit version.

It looks basically like XP with different eye-candy....... what'll no doubt happen is everyone not wearing sunglasses with run it in Classic mode, and it'll be the same as running XP in Classic mode.
Blech, I can't be bothered getting it to be honest |

Nope, only $129, unless of course you're referring to the outrageous $499 hardware price of a Mac Mini.

I have been using the Longhorn transformation pack, to theme xp like the longhorn slate style, I prefer it over xp's style.
I think I will wait until Longhorn has been out a year or so to get it, judging by how long it took m$ to get xp all patched up the way it should have been released.. Fudtone:Bsplayer is what I use for mac video I dont like quicktime.
