Windows Default Opener
Every program in windows opens in windows fax and picture viewer. Even those in control panel, regedit and msconfig. So is there a way of changing the default exe opener without regedit, msconfig or control panel?

Thanks for the welcome. But all programs do not work, when I try to launch an anti-virus or spyware software it is opened with windows and fax picture viewer . In fact all files no matter what their extension, .exe, .zip etc., are opened in windows and fax picture viewer with the obvious message 'No Preview available'.

You can check the icon of the files. if the icon is for the fax picture viewer it means that it was set to open for that app. You can right click on the file and then select open with.. then select the application you want to use and check the checbox to always open the file with that application.

Try to enter SAFE MODE and when in safe mode run ativirus and antispy see what happens.
While in safe mode you can check file association: control panel> folder options > file types Here you can rearange file associations but first run antivirus and antispy!!!

I found an .exe fix that changes the default program opener in windows xp back to its original setup, it is at http://dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm. I thank you all for your time and am grateful for your assistance.
