Removal of icons from desktop.
FONT=ArialSIZE=2COLOR=SlateGrey
SUBJECT: Removal of icons from desktop. 1. Operating Environment: I use Windows XP Prefessional, SP#1, and SP#2. 2. Description of the Problem: My desktop is almost completely covered by icons. These icons and their functions are not represented on the white Programs' Menu. If they were I would have already have deleted them from the desktop. 3. Questions relating to the problem: A. Without using the Desktop Cleanup Wizard, how do I move these icons and their functions onto the white programs' menu? How do I individually move them to a specific location on the white programs' menu? For example ... How would I move an icon entitled "Regisrtry Cleaner v.3.4" between Registry Add 5.6 and Registry Erraser v.7.8 on the white programs' menu? B. If this task can not be done with the operating system I currently have. Is there a utility/software I can purchase, which can perform this task for me? Thank You! Awaiting your response ... Also, if you want to do the above, you can just click and drag it to between the two in the Programs directory |

I do not know of an automated program to remove icons and place them back in their folder, but
Generally the icon is a copy and can just be deleted. During install the icon is placed both in the program file location and on the desk top. YOu can test this by right clicking th eicon and then navigating to the location where the exe is. If you want to keep the short cuts for use, you could create a new folder called 'shorcuts' on a drive, place all of the short cuts in it and then place a single shorcut to it on the desktop. It does add a double click to the process of the launch, - ie double click to open the shortcuts list and then another double click on the shortcut itself, but the desktop will be clear This is how to make your own shortcuts to answer your number 3 question To add a shortcut to the Classic Start menu You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings might also prevent you from completing this procedure. Right-click the Start button, and then click Open All Users. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Shortcut. Follow the instructions in the Create Shortcut Wizard. Notes Any shortcuts you add will appear on the menu you specified for all users who log on to the computer. An administrator can cut, copy, delete, rename, or move shortcuts for a group of users. For example, an administrator might want all users to have WordPad listed in the Start menu. To add a shortcut on the Start menu to each user's personal profile folder, on the first screen of the Create Shortcut Wizard, type %userprofile%, click Next, and then in Type a name for this shortcut, type a generic name (for example, Your user profile folder).
