Will XP run on my laptop?

I recently decided to install an OEM version of XP on my Thinkpad T20 laptop, with 128mb ram and pent III 700mhz processor. I did it because my Win98 crashed and I thought XP would be a good idea. It was an OEM version form my other computer, and it got running, but my desktop icons would disappear then it also crashed. So I am thinking of going and buying a retail version of XP to get the computer running again. Will it run OK with 128MB of ram? Or should I spend the extra 80 or 90 bux and upgrade to 256mb?

First, there is no difference between the OEM and teh retail versions of XP. If your computer crashed because of inadequate resources or a hardware conflict on the OEM, it is very likely that the same will happen with the retail version.
Secondly, a P3-700 w/128 MB of RAM is really low for XP. Even if you did get it to run, you would be waiting for the OS far more than it waiting for you. I would strongly suggest considering Windows 2000 instead. Having said that, 128MB of RAM is on the low end of its' requirements as well - get more RAM, it will make a difference.

My wife has a similar laptop, with a slower processor. I put Windows 98SE on it, which is probably your best bet with those specs. Going with XP pushes the capabilities of that thing. Expanding to 256 MB of memory, or even 512, would definitely help if you are set on XP.

And because your laptop crashes on Win 98 and Win XP you probably have faulty within your laptop something is causing crashes other than windows.
Even so you have minimum req. for running winXP it will still run without crashes maybe slower but fast enough, so try to run some diagnostic and find out what's happening.
Is it posible for you when crash occures to see any error messages or can you discrabe what's happening prior to crash.???
