95 to xp

I pick up this computer at work where they upgraded to new computers
it has windows 95, pentium 3 , 450 mhz , 192 mb of ram , 6 gb hard drive .
I want to upgrade to xp so i can use it in my garage so i can run small games for the kids, and use it to run my external hard drives to run my mp3 songs into my stereo
that's all. Will the computer handle it or do i need to find a faster one. any input would be big help. thanks again tony

Hi prtonycl,

Putting XP on that might be a stretch for performance. You may end up unhappy with the results you get because XP is a bit more draining than 95 (actually a LOT more). You may be happier with 98SE (not 98... 98SE) or 2000.

XP would probably run, but most likely not very well.
Just a suggestions.

I agree with Stryker. I've read that Win XP doesn't perform well with less than 256 Meg of RAM. Plus that processor should be a little faster to handle XP, but I don't think that'd be as big of an issue as the memory. It would probably do the mp3's okay, but depending on the games you plan on running it may lag down and make them not very playable. If they're really basic games that aren't too intense it may work fine though. Kinda like a system I saw awhile back.....they were trying to run Win ME on a Pentium 1 @ 200MHz with 128M of RAM. That thing loaded about as fast as a slug walking through molasses on a hot sidewalk.....but it did eventually get the job done, albeit not very fast.

pentium 3? isnt that supposed to be for servers...

try getting a P4 chip for cheap and add more disk space... i dont really know but 6 gb, u should be able to get by,

but it doesnt hurt to have more storage space for your mp3 files in case

^ In order to do that, you need to spend money on new motherbaord, new ram, maybe new casing. There are pentium 3 pc's, P2, P pc's. It just show how old it is.
