IE in XP Home

I'm using XP home and Internet Explorer will not work. Whenever I open a page it shows the " The page cannot be displayed" erorr. I've looked and resetted all the network settings and nothing seems to fix it. I have downloaded Firefox and that works fine, but I would really like IE to work as well, becuase AOL uses IE for some things that I would like to use. Please help.
