With most "store bought" computers you get a "restore' disk that restores the computer to it's original state. If they don't have one they should ask the provider why. Even though XP doesn't crash like 98 & ME you will still need a disk at some time to do a repair.

Many of the computers today come with a Restore or Recovery partition that is hidden on the hard drive. There's a link to that area within the Programs list. HP also offers and recommends to make your own Recovery/Restore CD's or DVD. Typically it takes 7-8 CD's or 1 DVD to make your own. I've done both for customer's. They didn't even know that option existed even tho it's one of the first things mentioned in the Setup directions that come with the new computer. In the event of a hard drive failure, these disks can be invaluable.

In your program's list you should find some short cuts to maintenance utilities supplied by your machine manufacturer, try looking in accessories and system tools places like that, one of the short cuts should open up a program installed by your machines manufacturer which will help you with maintenance, reinstallation of the OS and hopefully instructions on how to make a recovery CD.
