Can you give us a little bit of information about your machine, is it store bought or custom built? can you give us some hardware specifications? and what if any was the original operating system?.
Have you formatted the hard drive?

Do you have any USB devices plugged into the machine? or any other devices like printer or scanner?

Yes it will, unplug everything except the monitor keyboard and mouse, go into the bios and make sure the Cd drive you have the XP disk in is the first boot device.

The copy of XP that you borrowed from a friend to test your machine, did it install and run OK or have you never managed to get an OS working on this machine?

Try to unplug electricity from your comp for say 20 minutes and then try again.

To me that indicates that your new copy of XP is faulty, I am very surprised but I suppose it can happen. Please check it for scratches and marks and if you don't find any I suggest returning it to where you bought it from.

Have you got access to another CD player you can put in your machine to test? it's possible the lens is dirty on your CD player or something else in your CD player is malfunctioning.
