Major Problem
Slicked the hard drive and reinstalled fresh copy of windows xp home sp2. Using Aol dialup. Everything works excellent, but for some reason the computer will shutdown and restart by itself. Any feedback?

no, just shutdown and restart. Its a Dell Dimension 3550 128mb 2100DDRAM 120gb hd. This is for a customer of mine and I have never seen anything like it.

Those Dell's are a bit proprietary, is the hard drive compatible (can't see why it wouldn't be)? have you installed all the Dell paraphanalia like mobo drivers and whatnot?, have you bumped/disturbed anything without noticing?
Check all the cables and connections, how long does it run before shutting down? |

Could it possibly be heat-related? How long has the customer had the PC? Does it restart right away or does it take awhile?

checked all cables and connections, reinstalled about 3 days ago, just today it started doing that. It restarts just like i would restart it. All fans are running and its not overclocked. all Dell drivers installed back to factory default.

Did you activate windows and install SP2 on the internet?
If you did it sounds like a virus, same thing happened to me but I was getting the countdown window of the Sasser virus, had to happen right in front of the customer didn't it.

Turn off the Auto Restart on Error feature so you get the ol' BSOD with an error message. Post the error message and we can help ya find the problem. Control Panel>System>Advanced tab>Settings under Start Up and recovery

I installed SP2 from disk, and activated windows. No virus, Mcafee Professional Virus Scan is running. Already turned off auto restart, no BSOD just reboots and comes back online like nothing ever happened. Do you think that maybe the computer doesn't support Suspend of hibernate. Could this be the cause of the problem?
