Are you saying you want to do a reformat? Do you want to backup your data?

Dell Dimension 4550, Pentium 4 at 2.4 GHz, 512MB 266 MHz DDR SDRAM, 60GB Ultra ATA/100 7200 RPM Hard drive.
It all started when I left the modem turned on for about 6 hrs. When I came back it was all screwed up. I can't open ANY programs without it asking me to select from a list. This virus or whatever it is has taken some file out of my registry. Must be an important one since I can't open any programs without it. |

I take it this machine is a straight out of the box virgin Dell that you haven't added any hard ware to.
Do you have the Dell recovery CD? |

I haven't added any hardware and yes I have the recovery CD. I actually just put in the CD and deleted the partitions. Will this fix it.

Deleting the partitions will not fix the problem unless you deleted the partition with your OS in, if you have, then the only way forward for you now is to do a full destructive restore. This will erase your entire hard drive except for the hidden partition where your XP installation files are kept and will restore your machine to as it was when it was purchased.

yes, I deleted all of the partitions. Give her a bar of soap, because she'll be clean after this one.
