pesky popups-how do I keep 'em off PC?

Lately I've been getting windows in IE that want me to get a registry cleanup tool, spyware cleaner, etc. After much searching, I find that in my Temp folder of my Local Settings folder, usually named: ~wmvtmp1. I initially thought these came from sites other people have visited while using my computer. I've run 2 spyware programs, registry first-aid & Nortons. I've deleted all Temp and Internet Temporary files and yet they still come back. As I type this, a site for Registry Repair Pro just popped up in the background. I've enabled the popup blocker in Windows and use the popup blocker from Google, yet everytime I use IE, they keep comimg back to my Temp folder. Can anyone help me keep these pages at bay? Thanks

Have you used Ad-Aware? If not, it is a big help in removing adware, which causes pop-ups. It is available from www.lavasoft.com

Do you use "MSN messenger"?
Do you have to have it?

if no, then use windows search and find :msmsgs.exe
rename it : "msmsgs.exe.old" for example

one more thing, you might have to "end process" if it is running.( in win task)

The simplest solution would be to dump IE and use an alternative browser, such as opera or firefox. Both have built-in pop-up blockers that work very well. It's extremely rare that I see a pop-up ad in opera.

If you still wish to use IE, install google toolbar and upgrade to SP2 for added security and pop-up protection.

Those are the two simple methods. The third way to take care of a lot common ads is to use the hosts file found here: http://www.pcmech.com/show/internal/766/12/

thanks

A little late in getting back to my PC. Of all the above suggestions, adjusting security via the custom tab in internet options in IE is the only thing that has not been already done. I use both Adware & Spybot. I run these weekly, as well as Norton 6.5 & Registry First Aid 3.3. I have Google popup blocker installed and I use the XP blocker as well. I have adjusted the security tab to disable or at least prompt all active X items, yet I still get new windows popping up. As I type this, I have a window from: http://www.partypoker.com/index20100_np7.htm?wm=2357834
a window from: "A tribalfusion.com" and a window from: http://count.exitexchange.com/exit/1181164
I first thought an attempt to use a new P2P program may have given me the problems, but I've deleted all traces and restored to an earlier date. Thi stuff has only been happening this past week.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
