Hi all,
Got a new system (see bottom), but having problems playing Rogue Squadron3D and Xwing Alliance. Autorun will work in both drives but when I click "Play Game" it asks to insert disk, Just won't read them. Well, i CAN play Rogue in my DVD drive but sometimes it will kick me out. Says "Rogue Squadron has encountered a problem and will shut down" The CDROM won't read it at all. Alliance won't run in either. I installed DVD encrypter and shrink to backup DVD's. Could this be the problem? I didn't try any games before installing so I don't know if it worked before but I read somewhere in the archives that some DVD software could affect autoread but nothing about not reading discs. Both Drives will read Data or Music CD's no problem. Drivers are up to date. DirectX is 9. See if this will help http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;228985. If not you might have a virus or spyware.

This sounds similar to my experience this weekend. I tried to play Starcraft Broodwar with my apartment mate. We both run Windows XP but for some reason, my drives could not access the starcraft CD or the Broodwar CD. I have an external CDRW drive, and IDE DVD-ROM and an IDE DVDRW drive and the results were always the same. My friend had no problem.
First, goto My Computer and check to see if you can explore the drive and the disc's contents. If you cannot, then ignore my post. If you CAN access the CD's contents, right click on whichever file the computer needs to read to install or play the game. Right click and select "properties". Click on "compatibility" and try running the program in Windows 98/ME mode. This worked for me. Once you have the game installed, perhaps there is a patch that will fix these things. We spent an hour troubleshooting this problem before realizing we had other unfixable problems. Anyways, hopefully this will work for you. Either way, post your results!
