I am attempting to install XP on a new hard drive. Installation seems to be working fine until windows starts copying installation files. This process is about 90% complete then the cursor changes to the hour glass and the installation stops and computer freezes. I've tried this 7 or 8 times and it freezes more or less at the same place each time.
This is driving me crazy! Any suggestions/help would be appreciated. Nothing else is running at the same time- as far as I'm aware. stevemcw |

did you do i quick format in text based setup of XP? or did you do a full format? If full format check your video card, if it aint your video card try replaceing your memory. If that all fails to settle your problem then harddrive is bad, I have seen them bad straight out of the box.

PC freezes during XP installation
Zak,
Hard drive was clean installed full format. I have installed Windows 98 on a secondary drive with no problems- does this mean the graphics card and memory are OK and its the HD that's the problem ? thanks for the help stevemcw |

Have you been able to install WinXP before? I have installed various computers and some do not take well to WinXP; often it is due to the video card. I have removed the video card and put another one in and it has worked. Another thing that has worked is to slip stream WinXP with SP2, or sometimes only WinXP with SP1 slip streamed work. Then I added SP2. Doing this adds more drivers. Slip stream is an interesting process. Works with Win2000 as well. It's basically a no brainer. All you need is AutoStreamer. I got all my info at: http://www.ubcd4win.com/howto.htm. There is a section at the bottom called: Slipstreaming SP1a or SP2 to XP, AutoStreamer. But you can go directly to: http://www.autopatcher.com/autostreamer.html. I found the first one explained it better. I have found it to work very well, as well as saving you time. You need a CD burner though.

I agre with ray123 about that you get more drivers but anyhow windows with or witout SP2 will load basic drivers for any device you may have.
But maybe will be good to unplug any usb device (printer, scaner etc) as a mater of fact any device exept keyboard and mouse that you may have and you can plug them in once install of OS is successeful. And for a slipstreaming you dont need any software you just have to be a bit computer literate and have burning software look here !!! |
