question on system configuration utility

Whenever I remove checks from the boxes of certain programs like msn in startup, next time when I boot windowsxp, I get a messege something like this right after the bootup :

your computer is not running in normal mode and is running in selective mode ,inorder to avoid this messege, change the setting from selective mode to normal mode.
Iam sorry I donot remember the full messege but this is what I get after I remove checks from certain programs.

When I run the computer in normal mode,I lose all the changes that I make in startup. The check which I remove from the box of msn ,returns back and all the previous settings return.

What should I do inorder to remove the checks from those programs that start during bootup? these programs in startup infact cause my system to boot up slowly.

Regards,

You should only stop services in services tab in msconfig window check box by hide ms services and see witch services you don't need and stop them. To stop MS services unneeded right click on my comp > properties > advanced >settings(performance) > choose box by best performance and viola unneeded (most of) are stoped!!!
