no os found

my freinds laptop computer says this when u turn it on - no boot file recieved operating system not found
does this mean i gota reformate his hard drive then re load the os

Maybe you can repair installation.
Insert WinXP cd and after agreeing to End user agreenment (pressing F8) setup will search for prvious windows and when it findes choose this instalation then carefuly read to choose repair this installation!!!
DO not use F2 Recovery console if you don't have prepaird one!!!

Try running a HDD diagnostic from the HDD's manufacturer. If it comes back ok, it's probably a software problem, and you could try a repair. If it doesn't come back ok, the HDD has probably gone bad and will need replacing.
