Accidentally Deleted Partition in Windows XP setup wizard

I booted from the Windows XP setup CD-Rom, proceeded to delete the partitions on the local hdd so I could re install windows. Also had a USB HDD plugged in, and I accidentally deleted those partitions too. Unfortunately, the USB hard drive had hundreds of gigabytes of critical data.

Anyway to recover? Neither of the drives have been formatted. I partitioned and before I hit enter to start installing XP, which would have formatted the drives as well, I quit the setup.

None of the recovery programs can find any lost partitions.

I found this technet support page, but I'm not quite sure how to do this, add a volume? Is that the same as adding a partition? Will it work? Any ideas? Can Partition Magic do anything here?

I'm not sure that Partition magic will help you there, after some searching I found almost exact thing you did http://www.belchfire.net/article-print-114.html but look if you install windows on Hdd you wonted to install maybe you will be able to recover yours files from usb drive with this little software http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/UK/welcome.htm witch is by the way free it may help you!!! BUT DON'T FORMAT USB DRIVE!!!
EDIT:
There is countless number of recovery software check on this site http://www.downloadjunction.com/prod...0003/index.htm

I have recommended GetDataBack in the past... I still recommend it. My brother hosed his MFT a few weeks back and nothing was accessible -- I recovered all of his files with GDB. It costs money -- $70 -- but it works well.

If PC Inspector or GetDataBack doesn't work, try Ontrack Easy Recovery. NOT cheap but the trial will tell you what it can recover. Badcopy Pro might work too.

Hello,

The way to recover partition is to use Active@ partition recovery utility. It worked for me so I can say It's algorithms is really powerful. It does restores lost partitions indeed.
