Xp Pains
Just built my new computer and there are two problems I can't quite solve. The first is that the program snmp.exe starts running everytime I'm in Windows and it eats between 90-99 percent of my CPU power. I read that it has something to do with configuring LAN infrastructure, which I will need when I set up my network and I have been told that it will cause Windows to be unstable if I cancel it, but I can't have it eat all my CPU power, so, any suggestions?
My second problem is strange, after windows is loaded my floppy drive seems to beep ever few seconds, the sound it makes is not the same as when there is a floppy being read and it is short but grating after a while. It seems to be linked to the harddrive because the LED for my first harddrive flickers and at the end of one cycle and just before the start of a new cycle of flickering LED lights, the floppy makes the noise. I don't know what the problem is and it doesn't seem to be tied to any program as far as I can see, so anyone have any idea how to fix this little pain? |

did you install the floppy drive? Cables and all? You can cancel that snmp.exe all its for small network managment protocol. its only for network managment like packet sniffing and things like that. Its not needed for just a small home network. if you installed the floppy did you make sure the red line on the ribbon was plugged into pin 1 on the floppy drive if not then that is your problem.

The floppy drive works fine, I have used it several times and no problems, this problem has only occurred one or two days after the installation of Windows and the set up of windows and so it makes me think it is software related but it seems to be linked the system itself. As mentioned before when the harddrive LED flickers, like when the harddrive is being accessed, this occurs, only in between cycles, like a few flickers occur and then the floppy drive makes the noise and then another few HDD flickers and the cycle starts again. It stops once the a DVD/CD is being accessed and then restarts once the CD/DVD has loaded its information.
And if I do not need snmp.exe, how can I shut it off permanately rather than going to task manager and cancelling it every start up. And if I do this will it effect my network at all. |

SNMP Service
This service does not install by default, but if needed, you may install it later off the Windows XP CD. This service supports the use of networking equipment that uses SNMP as a mode of remote management. Default XP Home: Not Installed Default XP Pro: Not Installed Safe Setting: Not Installed Service name (registry): SNMP Dependencies: What service SNMP Service needs to function properly: * Event Log What other service require SNMP Service to function properly: * None Found this on this site:http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/serv...m#SNMP_Service

The pain, oh the pain
Okay, I just uninstalled snmp.exe and there was no problem, it had been original attached to a Gigabyte software that needed it but it doesn't matter now. The problem with the floppy has stopped after I downloaded an update for my virus software McAfee, which I couldn't download before because I was having problems with my Internet connection. This update found the virus W32/sdbot.worm.gen.j and some adware called 180search. I don't know which caused the problem but it is gone now.
But now there are more problems to replace those minor ones. Now everytime I start windows, McAfee Security Center and McAfee Virus scan won't work, at every start-up I get the message "An error occurred while Initialising Activeshield. Your system might be running out of resources or disk space. Please close other applications and try restarting activeshield". So I tried using Disk defragmenter which starts but won't start defragmenting any of the drives, Just like Microsoft Management Control runs but won't allow me to see full details on any of the errors, which I normally access by right click/properties or double clicking. After a while I get the error "AppName:mmc.exe AppVer:5.1.2600.0 ModName:ntmsapi.dll ModVer:5.1.2400.1106 offset:00001c3e" and MMC closes. There are two common Event ID errors one 7000 I believe had something to do with snmp.exe and the other 4609 I’m not sure but now even though I get an error when I start windows it does not enter event log in MMC but Alerts and Information statements do. Also none of the programs when running show up on the taskbar like they do normally. My Internet connection is gone and I can't reconnect it and so is my Network gone, which normally just had an X through it. It seems to only effect system programs though as all the other apps work fine but don't show up on the taskbar on the bottom of the screen. I tried rebooting and starting with 'Last Known Good Configuration' but alas it doesn't change a thing. So out of the frying pan and into the fire. |

This should be able to restore your network connection:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html I'd advise you to completely uninstall all McAfee applications and see what happens - get everything working right then consider installing alternate security applications. If you really want to stick with McAfee (I personally wouldn't, but it's your call) then reinstall them. |

I'm sorry that you was the first one to whom I didn't suggested to run antivirus and antispy in safe mode! I would folow the glc-ies lead and try to fix and I know that is up to you but I to recommend a different antivirus and try to use ICF SP2 (you are using comp for personal use right?) if not try to buy something much better from McAfee.
As for anti spy if you are using free version of Ad-Aware maybe it's better to download Microsoft's Antispayware here ! Sorry for not seeing the da*n malware!!! P.S. Maybe you will eventualy have to repair windows (if that program from GLC dosen't help) if you decide to do that don't reinstall windows try to repair it first you will just lose windows updates and not to you important data( to do it successefuly search thru tread's)!!!

Finally by repairing my XP with the CD everything seems to be back to normal but I can't get rid of Mcafee, no matter what I try, I have tried in the registry Windows/Current Version/Uninstall and that got rid of part of it and I tried in Safe mode and to no avail. Because I only upgraded part of Mcafee, the security Center and the Virus Scan, just how Mcafee do it, there are two seperate Mcaffee's one named Mcafee and the other Mcafee.com, I got rid of the later via Add/Remove Programs after the XP repair but the other seems to have no uninstall options.
Thanks for you help so far, ye have been great. One more thing, in case someone else encounters this problem, winsockxpfix replaced the registry files but it didn't do anything, it was only after XP repair from CD that the Internet connection worked again. And one last thing does anyone have a better Anti-virus software in mind. |

anti-virus
try avg- I have used it for quite a while and am more than satisfied
http://www.grisoft.com/doc/40/lng/us/tpl/tpl01 - the only thing I did not set up was the e-mail scanner but I'm very careful with my mail anyway. You can even schedule daily updates!

Try to delete them manualy unhide hiden files and folders check in Application Data folder and path goes like this C:/document and settings/your name/application data
Then check if you can recognise McAfee files in C:/windows/perfech then find them in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE again. |

The pain that never ends
Okay, I clean installed my whole system but now there are more problems. The first is just a minor one, I had to delete some programs that were causing problems in start-up but now, even though they are deleted, they are still listed as startup programs in MSConfig, any ideas how to get rid of them. The second, has to do with my Internet connection, while my modem attaches to the internet, firefox or IE won't find any sites. I have pinged the DNS and it works, so it is not the internet connection, I thought it might be Microsoft Firewall, but that isn't enabled for the connection, I disabled ZoneAlarm but that didn't change anything.
There are one funny thing though, when I do connect ZoneAlarm keeps detecting people trying to access my computer and they keep changing IP address, I presume it is different people and this happens the second I connect and keeps happening. And as two last small notes, for some reason AVG seems to be greyed out, when its in the taskbar, as if its not on or something and it just flashes at startup and disappears to the taskbar and also PestPatrol doesn't work, each time I try to load it up, I get an error. Any suggestions? |
