xp keeps restarting

hi, my problem is that i turned on my computer this morning and it gets to the winxp logo like it always does when it starts up but then just the computer just restarts everytime. i tried going into safe mode, last know configuration that worked, and debugging mode (whatever this is) but still does the same thing. I disabled the autmatic restart on system failure and then it gave me some blue screen saying system failure. I remember last night that xp installed some updates before i shut down. is this what is causing the problem? was it some virus instead of updates? how do i fix this or am i screwed? isn't there a way to run a virus check w/o having to go into windows? thanks guys.

I had the same problem after I downloaded SP2. I did a repair install over the same windows folder and everything worked ok, didn't lose any data, but I wasn't happy with it, there were like 2 of everything. So I was then able to back what I wanted and reinstall the right way.

Wish I had a better answer for you, maybe if you wait for another hour or so someone else will post that has found an easier way to fix this.

it gave me some blue screen saying system failure.
We need more details on this message. A stop error code would be a good start.

alright when i selected the option 'disable automatic restart on system failure' I got this blue screen saying the entire message of this:

STOP: c000021a {fatal system error}
the windows logon process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of
0xc000018( 0x00000000 0x00000000)
the system has been shut down.

i run virus scans all the time on my computer, just ran one yesterday before i shut down the computer at night so im assumming the windows update that started doing its thing when i shut it down last night is causing this problem. Any ideas? Thanks.

Could it be a virus that changed the boot codes

thanks for the tips guys. i was wondering though. i have windows xp installed on my C: drive and there really isn't much important information on that drive, because all my files are on my D: drive. if i reinstalled windows xp on my C: drive will i lose anything on my D: drive? Im asking this because i have a beta version of service pack 2 installed on the C: drive right now for winxp professional but i have a cd that has the full service pack 2 and was just wondering if i could do a clean install on drive C: with the full service pack 2. i want everything on drive D: to stay put. is this possible? thanks.
