WIndows 2000 keeps freezing - unusable -how do I remove from boot default?

I have Windows 2000 and Win 98 installed on my laptop. The Windows 2000 keeps freezing and is unusable. I can't even reair or reinatll it.

How can I remove 2000 and/or get the boot to default to the Win98 OS rather than the Windows 2000 OS. I have the options, but as 2000 isn't stable I can't reset the default boot to 98.

You can change the default to 98 by manually editing the boot.ini file. You can do this while booted into 98.

I didn't partition the drive - it didn't warn me I should - unfortuantely even 2000 set up freezes - so I can't repair. Even safe mode freezes.

So I can edit the boot.ini file to default to 98, great. Can I then simply delete the 2000 or rather the WINNT folder?

Are you sure that you have dual boot, by your words you say that you have installed two OS on a same partiton or did you upgraded win98 to a win2k???
Be careful editing boot.ini if you dont have dual boot you may finish reinstalling windows from scrach!!!

Personally, I'd boot into 98 and save the files you need - then do a total wipe and reinstall what you want properly. You don't need to edit the boot.ini to get into 98, just choose it when the boot menu comes up.

When I installed 2000, and certainly when I tried to reinstall 200 to repair, it said it was "upgrading". The drive isn't partition, but it does offer Windows (as in 98) or 2000 on boot, and now 2000 set up.

I'm not sure I've still got all the HP drivers to reinstall 98 or 2000. I don't recall the HP website being to helpful on that front. Otherwise I'd have wiped and installed 2000.

2000 may have most of the drivers you need. What model is the laptop?

What is the line I need to add to boot from win98?

To make something a comment do you place in [] rather than preceding with an #?

Here's the boot:

[Boot Loader]
Timeout=5
Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"
C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Setup"
